The HI-TEC Walkerbay Xtreme, a three-day multisport adventure festival taking place in Hermanus between 29 April and 1 May, has received official endorsement from Wesgro, the official tourism, trade and investment promotion agency for Cape Town and the Western Cape.
“We are incredibly excited and proud to receive Wesgro’s support,” says Rick Oosthuyzen, who heads up the HI-TEC Walkerbay Xtreme organising team. “Their support not only speaks to the greater region’s confidence in this new event on the race calendar, but also their belief in the sustainable benefits that the event offers to the community outside of peak season.”
Adds Tim Harris, CEO of Wesgro, “Wesgro’s efforts focus on supporting events that stimulate tourism and spread visitors across the province during the traditional winter season. Through our promotional efforts in 2016, regional events created 1 600 temporary jobs, drove 150 000 visitors into the regions, and resulted in an estimated economic impact of R260 million over the April to September period.”
While Hermanus is best known as South Africa’s Whale Capital, it is slowly but surely establishing itself as the Overberg – and quite possibly South Africa’s – international sport and adventure hub. In addition to bringing some of the country’s finest adventure sport athletes to the town, Hermanus most recently played host to the inaugural Global Challenge – a international women’s golf invitational – in February, as well as Stage 1 and the Stage 2 start of the ABSA Cape Epic in March.
“It is an undisputed fact that sporting events have the power to generate significant economic benefits, which is why hosting events such as these is important for Hermanus and the region,” adds Mr Oosthuyzen. “In addition to the economic injection into the town and local business between the town’s two premier tourist seasons, these events also serve as an incubator for job creation and skills development. I look forward to collaborate with the Hermanus Business Chamber to calculate the actual economic impact of these off-peak events on the town.”
Close to 1 000 athletes and their supporters are expected to flock to Hermanus for Walkerbay Xtreme. The rugged, yet beautiful cliff path, breathtakingly beautiful mountains and blue ocean lapping at the shoreline offer a perfect event stage for athletes and spectators alike.
What makes this event so unique is that it is made possible through the combined efforts of the community of Hermanus, See & Sand, the Sports and Life Skills Orientated Training Centre, the Hermanus Business Chamber and the local tourism community.
Everyone is catered for with all the events starting or ending in the Old Harbour precinct and a total of twelve different events ranging from the Hi-Tec Pirate fun walk along the cliff path to the exhilarating urban extreme cycling race. It is all about finding your own extreme, hence the campaign hashtag of #findyourxtreme.
